Why the Best Career Websites Don't Start From a Blank Page

7 mins

Many careers sites are a job board with a logo on top. Candidates scroll through a list of vacancies, and nothing tells them what it’s actually like to work there. Yet the company behind the job can matter just as much to candidates as the role itself.

The best career websites help candidates understand both: the opportunities available and the people, culture and values behind them. When I design Venn’s themes, I’m trying to close that gap.

Every careers website theme has a personality

A theme isn’t just a layout. Each one I design has its own character in its spacing, structure, typography and rhythm, and that character helps bring out a brand’s personality.

Cadence is our sport theme. It’s modern, bold and energetic, and its video modules let a brand show its culture instead of just describing it. Video can bring people, places and everyday moments to life in a way that words alone sometimes can’t.

Components like Display your Values and Bold Stats sit alongside the video. A sports club could use the stats for members, trophies or community reach, while a construction firm could use them for projects delivered or apprentices trained. Same theme, completely different stories, and the brand’s own colours, fonts and imagery do the rest.

The Edit has a different character. It’s a fashion-first, editorial-style theme made for brands with a strong creative identity, and it’s built to feel polished and artful. It has an animated timeline for founding dates, milestones and launches, plus space for video content. It would suit a fashion or retail brand, a design studio, or any company with a heritage story worth telling.

A starting point you can make your own

Careers website templates can provide a useful starting point, but they still need room for your brand’s identity. I think of themes as a strong foundation. You bring your colours, fonts, imagery and logo, and the theme provides the structure, hierarchy and usability a good careers site needs. Then you build on it.

Every theme is built on the Venn platform, bringing the design and recruitment tools together. Choosing a theme gives you a starting point for how your site looks, with the platform supporting how it works.

That includes Smart Job Search, which is built around real life, not just job titles. Candidates can browse roles on a map, or set their starting point, how they travel and the longest commute they’d accept, and only see roles that fit those choices. It’s a practical feature that helps candidates decide whether an opportunity could work for them before applying.

Telling your EVP story, not just listing it

Your employee value proposition (EVP) is easy to write and harder to make believable. A bulleted list of benefits only tells part of the story. Showing the culture helps candidates understand what those promises look like in practice.

That’s why the Social Hub matters. It gives a brand one place on its own website for videos, podcasts, blogs, events, downloads and press releases, with no separate content platforms to manage.

Content can be filtered by category, so a company can show what really goes on in the business: company news, culture, team spotlights, learning and development, and more. Candidates get to know the people and the place at their own pace, before they ever click “apply”.

What I think about when designing a theme

  • Clarity first: a candidate should know where to go within seconds.
  • Personality second: the design should have a point of view and help the brand feel recognisable.
  • Flexibility always: it has to work across different industries without losing its character.

Find the one that feels like you

A careers site is the front door to your employer brand, and there’s no single way it should look. That’s why there are several themes to choose from, each with its own character.

Browse the careers website themes and see which one feels closest to your brand. If none of them feel quite right, we can build something custom on the same platform.

Careers website FAQs

What makes the best career websites stand out?

The best career websites make it easy to find relevant jobs while helping candidates understand the employer behind them. Clear navigation, useful job search tools and straightforward applications all matter. Employee stories, videos and examples of development opportunities add context, helping candidates decide whether the company could be right for them.

What should you look for in a career website builder?

A career website builder should make it straightforward to manage vacancies, update content and reflect your employer brand. Look for flexible design options, clear navigation and job search tools that help candidates find suitable roles. Space for employee stories, videos and company news also helps your website offer more than a list of vacancies.

Can careers website templates reflect your employer brand?

Yes. Careers website templates provide a starting structure, while your colours, fonts, imagery and content help make the site your own. Choosing a theme with a character suited to your brand gives you a stronger foundation. The stories you share about your people, values and working environment then bring that identity to life.

How can a careers website communicate your EVP?

A careers website can communicate your employee value proposition by showing what it means in everyday working life. Employee interviews, team videos, development stories and examples of company values in action help support your claims. This gives candidates a clearer picture of what they could experience if they join.
